Introduction to Batik with Audrey Whyle & Maggie Allmark
21st October 2021 –
In this workshop you will learn about how to develop a design or image into a piece of Batik.
Batik is both an art and a craft, a wonderfully creative medium which is very popular and well known in the West. The art of decorating cloth in this way, using wax and dye, has been practised for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.
To make a batik on this one day workshop, you will draw out a design of your choice onto plain fabric, and then block out areas of this by applying hot wax using a tjanting tool or brush. Then you will paint colours into the design using brightly coloured batik inks. Once completed you will then iron out the wax to complete the work.
The workshop will be led by experienced ArtShack textile artists Audrey Whyle and Maggie Allmark.
Cost £65 to include all materials and refreshments.
